Standards and Policies for Pre-College Students

The following standards of conduct and policies outline many of the standards and policies required of and applicable to Pre-College students during Summer 2024. Please note, however, that the following outline is not exhaustive, and Pre-College students must adhere to all rules and directions established and communicated by the Office of Pre-College Programs, its staff, faculty, and Resident Counselors as well as directions provided by University officials and as required by applicable University policies and federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Violation of applicable standards of conduct or policies may result in disciplinary action including, but not limited to, the student’s removal from the Pre-College program.   • Any type of disrespectful, exclusionary, discriminatory, threatening, aggressive, or abusive behavior is strictly prohibited and may be grounds for removal from the program. This includes social media, verbal expression, and physical conduct.
  • Summer Scholars and Leadership Seminars students must adhere to the Code of Conduct for Summer High School Residents and Summer Safety at Notre Dame.
  • Summer Scholars and Leadership Seminars students are required to read, understand, and abide by the Pre-College Residential Handbook.
  • Pre-College Study Abroad: Italy students are required to read, understand, and abide by the Pre-College Study Abroad Italy Handbook.
  • Pre-College Study Abroad: Ireland students are required to read, understand, and abide by the Pre-College Study Abroad Ireland Handbook.
  • Pre-College Study Abroad: London students are required to read, understand, and abide by the Pre-College Study Abroad London Handbook.
  • Pre-College Study Abroad: South Africa students are required to read, understand, and abide by the Pre-College Study Abroad South Africa Handbook.
  • Regardless of a student’s age or the location of the program, Pre-College students may not possess or consume any alcohol, tobacco, e-cigarettes, personal vaporizers/vapor cigarettes, medications not prescribed to student, or illegal substances or paraphernalia during the program.
  • Pre-College students may not engage in any sexual activity during the program.
  • Pre-College students must comply with all emergency and safety procedures established in connection with the program.
  • No guests or visitors are permitted during the Pre-College program without written approval and signature of the Pre-College Faculty Director or Associate Program Director.
  • Summer Scholars and Leadership Seminars students are not allowed to go in a residence hall of the opposite gender.
  • Pre-College Study Abroad students may not have any guests or visitors in their assigned hotel room except students of the same gender who are participants in the Notre Dame Pre-College Study Abroad Program. Pre-College Study Abroad students may not visit any hotel room or floor that is not assigned to the program.
  • It is the parents’/legal guardians’ responsibility to make arrangements for any known medical or mental health needs or accommodations for their Pre-College student at least thirty (30) days prior to the start of the program.
  • Notre Dame staff are not responsible for storing or administering Pre-College student medications, prescription or non-prescription, during the program. Pre-College students must take responsibility for storing or administering any medications, prescription or non-prescription, that may be necessary during the program.
  • Pre-College students’ receipt of a Satisfactory (S) grade and could receive one (1) college credit, contingent upon the student’s completing and meeting all of the program requirements.   • Pre-College students must attend and be on time for all classes, excursions, field trips, meals, check-ins, and scheduled events (unless clearly designated as optional).
  • Summer Scholars and Leadership Seminars students may not leave the Notre Dame campus outside a scheduled and supervised activity without a Pre-College staff member or Resident Counselor chaperone.
  • The Indiana campus is defined as Douglas Road on the north, Twyckenham Drive on the east, Napoleon Street on the south (limited to Eddy Street Commons), and 933/Business 31/N. Michigan Street on the west.
  • The University has the sole discretion, at any time, to cancel a Pre-College student’s participation in or withdraw a student from the Pre-College program for any reason should the student’s safety and well-being and/or the safety and well-being of the participants in the program be compromised by the student’s actions or behavior.
  • Parents/guardians are responsible for their Pre-College student prior to the student’s check-in with the University employees in charge of the Program and following Student's check-out on the last day of the program.
  • By allowing Pre-College student to participate in the program, student and student’s parents/guardians agree and confirm that the student is physically and emotionally healthy to participate in the program.
  • All costs and expenses associated with any medical or mental healthcare for a Pre-College student during the program are the responsibility of the student’s parents/guardians.
  • Pre-College students may not drive any vehicle during the program.
  • Failure to comply with the rules and policies applicable to the Pre-College program may lead to disciplinary action up to and including the student’s dismissal and withdrawal from the program without refund of tuition or fees.
  • Should a Pre-College student’s participation be canceled or withdrawn, the student’s parents/guardians will be responsible for all costs associated with the student’s return home and will not receive any refund for program costs, tuition, or fees.

Because Notre Dame is committed to a Christian ideal of community and to the growth and formation of each individual, the ties that bind members of this community are not always the same as those within society at large. The University’s expectations for conduct go beyond what is minimally required for maintaining public order, as we actively seek what is good and life-giving both for the individual and for the University community.

The following actions and behaviors are clearly inconsistent with the University’s expectations for membership in this community:

  • Abusive or harassing behavior, including unwelcome communication
  • Actions which seemingly affect only the individual(s) involved but which may have a negative or disruptive impact on the University community and/or concern a student’s personal and academic growth
  • Alcohol possession and use
  • Behavior which causes a serious disturbance of the University community or infringes upon the rights and well-being of others
  • Failure to follow the directive of a University official aimed at protecting life, health or safety, or necessary for the good order and proper functioning of the University community
  • Sexual activity
  • Willful damage to the reputation or psychological well­-being of another
  • Discriminatory harassment
  • Dishonesty, forgery or taking advantage of another
  • Drugs and controlled substances
  • Health, safety, and security policies
  • Initiation and hazing
  • Retaliation
  • Sexual assault
  • Sexual misconduct
  • Dating violence
  • Stalking
  • Conduct that creates a hostile environment
  • Theft of property
  • Vandalism or damage to property
  • Unauthorized possession of explosives, incendiary devices, firearms or other weapons
  • Violence or the threat of violence against another person, or any action which causes injury to another
