Application Requirements

Admission into the Seminar for African American Scholars is selective. Students applying for this special program must be prepared to give as much as they receive in terms of active thought and participation in class discussions. Accepted students are typically high academic achievers and leaders in their high schools and communities. A well conceived and executed essay that addresses the student’s cultural and leadership experience will weigh greatly on the admission decision as will a strong teacher or counselor recommendation.

Accepted students to the Scholars seminar meet the following requirements:

  • Ethnicity: African American students or students whose identity and experiences resonate within the context and focus of the seminar.
  • Religion: Catholic students are eligible to apply. Non-Catholic students attending a Catholic high school are eligible to apply.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated leadership abilities in school, church, community, and/or social organizations (e.g. class officers, youth ministers, community leaders, etc.)
  • Graduation Year: High school students who will enter their senior year fall 2010 (and therefore graduate Spring of 2011) and who plan to attend college immediately after high school are eligible to apply.
  • High School Academic Record: Competitive applicants are those students who have pursued a rigorous curriculum (e.g. AP/honors courses) and performed very well (typically A students), who have standardized test scores (SAT/ACT/PSAT/PLAN) that are very strong.

If you meet these criteria and are interested in participating in the African American Scholars at Notre Dame program, we invite you to submit an online application.
